I am interested in the effects of human-driven ecological change at all scales from the molecular level up to the landscape.

Research

Evolution

My PhD research asks a simply formulated, but nearly intractable question: What is the smallest temporal and spatial scales at which functionally meaningful evolution occurs? I study rapid and microgeographic adaptation in wood frog populations using manipulative experiments both in the lab and field, coupled with population genomics.

Road Ecology

Roads are a major burden for wildlife and ecosystems. Roads impact wildlife through direct mortality from vehicle collisions and also indirect effects associated with habitat loss and fragmentation, behavioral avoidance, pollution, etc. that always accompany roads. I am interested in figuring out how we can design roads to be more wildlife friendly.

Wilderness

Designated Wilderness areas are the best set of instructions we have to understand the natural dynamics of ecosystems, and they are the baselines by which we can compare future change. I am especially interested in the philosophy and ethics behind the wilderness concept and the practical application of wilderness management and stewardship.
